TRANSITION
Local
Chapters Separate from OBD National
Greetings!
The
local members, committees and executive boards of the Organization
of Black Designers - Washington, DC Metro Area (OBD/DC), Chicago
(OBD/Chicago) and San Francisco Bay Area (OBD/SFBA) chapters have
worked hard in 2005 to provide you with the benefits and services
you need to remain successful in your career. We have come to the
closing of another event-filled year that included a regional
symposium, local seminars, award ceremonies, portfolio workshop and
review, and other networking/social events.
While we have continued with our local programs over the past
several years, the focus and goals of OBD National and its
affiliated chapters have moved in very different directions.
Together we have been working to resolve resulting organizational
and administrative issues. However, OBD National and the Chapters
have come to the conclusion that a redefinition of our individual
mission and structure is required in order to better support local
membership and programming.
Consequently, an important transition will take place in 2006.
Effective January 31, 2006, OBD/DC, OBD/Chicago and OBD/SFBA, as
remaining chapters, are no longer affiliated with the national
Organization of Black Designers. The formal structure of the
chapters is in the process of dissolution.
This decision was not made lightly and this does not mean that
there will be an end to the collaboration of Black design
professionals as a group. Chicago and DC have been operating
charitable activities under Project Osmosis and FocusOnDESIGN
respectively for several years. Chicago will continue as the I-Group
under Osmosis and DC is working on a strategic plan to continue
research, education and mentoring programs under FocusOnDESIGN.
In the coming months, you will hear more about local plans for 2006
and efforts for continued involvement with the global design
community.
Former leaders of the local chapters, along with the
collaborative efforts of individuals across the country and
internationally, will continue to work with partnering organizations
on projects and events that support our common interests and goals.
Meanwhile, as we work through administrative issues on a local
basis, financial members of OBD/DC and supporters will continue to
enjoy current benefits including job referrals, exposure, seminars
and events, etc. Watch for updates as we solidify our individual
plans for growth in our respective areas.
As always, your continued support, ideas, and participation are
both appreciated and vital for our future success. We would like to
solicit your feedback and involvement in future planning of the
transition that will take place in your community.
Please feel free to send your comments regarding activities in
the Mid-Atlantic Region to fod@focusondesign.org.
Messages will be forwarded as appropriate and a response
provided as soon as possible. Also look for further information at
